just curious: What's the rationale behind having both a "Groups and Files" view and a "Detail View"? I personally would have designed these two lists to be unified in one. What advantages do I have with the current design, and how do the people here take advantage of that?

Most of the time I use Groups and Files. With all of my stuff hierarchically organized into subgroups I can generally focus on all the files related to a single task. I can also split that view into two if I want to focus on two tasks and the listing is too long for everything to fit in without scrolling.

On the other hand, I use the Detail view when I need to quickly find something by typing its name in the search box, or need to filter by a certain file type. This later task is easily done because you can type file name extensions ".pch" for example, and/or choose the sort column and direction. Once you've zeroed in on the subset of files you want to work with you can easily edit them and move foward and back using the keys for "Next Detail" and "Previous Detail".

So in practice, for me, 95% of the time the Detail view is collapsed and out of sight, but I jump into it when necessary (conveniently bound to Command-Option-F, you can reveal the detail view and jump to the search field in one hit). Alternatively, you can toggle it without jumping to the find field by hitting the key binding for "Zoom Editor Out" (Command+Shift+E here).

There are also some things you can do in the Detail view which you just can't easily do anywhere else. For example, changing the "Role" of a file in a target, or seeing all of the files in a target at once.

At first I too found it to be a bit redundant, but the truth is that each view has advantages for specific tasks. And I notice that the more files in a project, the more useful the Detail view becomes because of it's filtering/searching capabilities. I find it much more useful than "Smart Groups", for example.
