I can't speak for the Xcode team, but the details view is for a
*lot* more things than simply showing you a list of files. First of
all, it provides a simple way of essentially querying the contents
of project. Click on a group and it lists all of the items in that
group in a flat list, independent of the hierarchy of the group.
You can then sort and filter by various criteria. Something that
would be extremely cumbersome to do in tree view.
Well, right now I'm constantly making groups & files larger to use
it, and then I have to make it smaller again to decently use the
details view... And that's on a cinema display(!).
Select the Executable group, and you'll get a list of executable
complete with controls to change the current one.
Not quite sure when I'd use that, guess I don't usually have
several executables in one target.
Select the Errors and Warnings groups see a list of recent
compilation errors.
I'm more of a Build Progress window fan, myself.
Select the Find Results and see a list of recent search results.
This is a great way of narrowing search results, because you can
filter the contents of the search results list.
I'll have to file a bug on getting this in the regular Find window.
Select the bookmarks groups and see a table view of your bookmarks.
And constantly have to scroll around the file list. :-/
Select a smart group and see the items that match that smart
group's criteria.
Well, uncollapsing works just as fine for me.
The vast majority of these features would be impossible to fold
into the Groups & Files panes. And if you did, it would either take
up huge amounts of screen real estate or be incredibly awkward to use.
Thanks, that's the kind of point in favour of the split arrangement
I was looking for. Though it doesn't really help me much, as I get
most of this stuff from separate windows anyway.
That said, if you aren't really using the details view, consider
switching to the Condensed layout style and adding additional
columns to your Groups & Files table.
Oh, great! I wasn't really aware "condensed" meant that. Though
there's one huge problem: There is no filter field for the groups &
files list. Guess I gotta go off and file a bug.
