Restarting didn't help. By doing a ps in Terminal, I found out
that Automator had decided that it liked an old version of my app
that it had dredged out of an archive folder, and was running this

So, I finally got it to work by launching the new version of the
app before running the Automator action in Xcode.
I use an approach vaguely similar to Bill's: a script build phase
(dragged to the top of the target build stages) which deletes any
previously existing products and also zaps any sefs in /tmp.
If it really had been a problem with the sdef, the AppleScript
Implementor's list will likely get you there faster.
