Using gdb in XCode

I just started using XCode and have problems to debug even the sample code provided with XCode. Can anybody explain me which settings I have to change to enable debugging. So far, if I try to set a breakpoint by clicking on the editor frame, the Add Breakpoint option in the menue is disabled and I can not activate it.

I am using OS 10.3.9 and XCode 1.5.
