Maybe the use of symbolic links will sidestep this issue.
E.g. if other projects are using a folder "/Volumes/OurDisk/Our Stuff" then you could make a symlink:
ln -s "/Volumes/OurDisk/Our Stuff" /Volumes/OurDisk/OurStuff
and then use the latter name in Xcode
