Distributed Builds - Overloading System

Prerequisites: Using Xcode 2.2.1 on 10.4.5 for all systems involved,
though it has been happening since at least 2.1.
I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced problems with
distributed builds overloading a system. Specifically, running way
more daemons and jobs then there are physical processors in the
system. For example, whenever I activate distributed builds on
either of my PowerBooks, they will often start and accept up to 4!
jobs at once. They quickly become a bottleneck, making it faster to
build locally on one, rather than sharing the load.
Is there a setting somewhere that I can use to limit how many daemons
launchd will start up?
I'm prepared to submit a bug report... just wanted to see if there
is a known workaround for this before I do.
