At THAT time, your docs basically said it was "Xcode or the
highway".
It should be noted that nothing (building, compiling etc.) wise that
Xcode does can not be done from the command line.
You can see the output of Xcode's builds, or run xcodebuild from the
commandline, and you can perfectly reproduce all these steps in make,
or any build file you desire.
And thus, this of course includes universal binaries.
There are a number of very good reasons to use Xcode (while I still
miss vim emulation), but you don't have to.
