To verify what Xcode does, click on the small button looking like a text page at the left of horizontal splitter in the build window. The tooltip reads "Select this to show the build transscript".

Been there, done that. (See my more recent posts.) I figured it all out like you suggested -- by trial and error and examining the "build log". One little "wrinkle", however: you must add a "Build Phase" called "Frameworks & Libraries", or else all those "add existing frameworks" don't make it into the linker options ...
