Unix Development in Xcode

I am trying to port some unix applications over to Mac and I have just started using Xcode. I am also a new Mac user. This may be a loaded question so I apologize in advance. What do people generally prefer as far as installing unix programs, or, what works better with Xcode? DarwinPorts or Fink? Or, if this is a matter of personal preference, which one is easier?
