I'd just like to echo what Jonny said: the slowdown isn't just during
library loading - it seems to occur on every single user command
to gdb.
My productivity has taken a *major* hit since I've started working
in Xcode only. Having 6 CPUs around the house to distribute builds
to brings build time really close to CodeWarrior, but all the
molasses-like slowness of debugging (so it this Xcode's or gdb's
fault?),
Can't blame this on gdb, CW uses GDB as it's debugger 'nub'.
waiting for large source files to load into a window (a progress
bar for loading a source file? C'mon!), Xcode doing who-knows-what
behind the scenes with indexing or something for 30 seconds at a
time when I move a file in the project window, the unexpected
exceptions and other errors I get when I open a project and close
it before it gets done updating the source control status, all
these things are a major pain in the a** and are wasting my time.
I sincerely hope that the Xcode team will work solely on speed
improvements for 2.3 or 3.0 or whatever the next release will be. I
love Apple and their products, but Xcode's performance is a really
low point on their record. It has enough features for now, now
let's make it usable.
