What is "Creator" 4 bytes used for?

hi-

In Xcode there is a Preference setting for the Creator attribute, a 4 char field. I always leave that at the default of ???? and everything works. I am wondering if I should set it to something (and maybe register it?) It seems to have something to do with legacy issues? HFS resource forks maybe? or low level kernel drivers? Is it used for Cocoa apps?

thanks!-
