Architecture specific options in Universal Binary

Whatever I try, I'm unable to give specific build settings for each architecture when compiling a universal binary.

The info in the link below doesn't help either, I can't make it work in XCode 2.2.x.
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/ universal_binary/universal_binary_compiling/chapter_2_section_7.html

I'm trying to use -mpowerpc-gpopt but once xcode starts to build for the i386 architecture, I get errors because that option is passed to the compiler.
Can someone give an example, where this option, in XCcode, is actually being used in the ppc architecture and ignored in the i386 architecture when building a UB?

Thanks,

Yvo
