Static .a libraries with multiple archs

If I compile a static library using gcc (libXXX.a) -- it's the SpiderMonkey JavaScript Engine -- and give it two archs (-arch ppc -arch i386) -- and then included that in an XCode project (that also has two archs), will it create a proper universal binary?
