As Dr. Nick of the Simpsons sez :
Hi Everybody !
Ive been away from Java and the Mac for the last year
or so and I need some information regarding
development environments for Java on the Mac (i.e. :
IDEs).
In case youre wondering, Ive been involved with
something called Peak Oil (not to be confused with
Peek Oil) & Im on the Steering Committee of Peak
Oil NYC
(Earls : http://oilawareness.meetup.com/36/,
http://peakoilnyc.org/,
http://www.energysolutionsconference.org/).
But, quite frankly, who cares ?
Were all here to use XCode, not talk about resource
depletion and the imminent collapse of our Hydrocarbon
Addicted Civilization and the impending extinction of
Homo Hydrocarbonicus.
So, my 1st question is this :
How good an IDE is XCode for Java software
development ?
And, my next question is :
If you do use XCode for Java software development why
do you prefer it over the other IDEs out there?
And, my final question is :
If you dont use XCode for Java software development,
which IDE do you, use and why do you prefer it over
XCode ?
In the spring of 2005 I stopped doing software
development and spent most of the last year working as
an activist for something called Peak Oil (no, I
wont bore you with the details of that as its not in
any way germane to the information and assistance Im
looking for in this email).
At that time, I was using Metrowerks Cold Worrier 8 to
do my Java software development work on the Mac. The 2
things I especially liked about Cold Worrier 8 were :
1. The Java compiler was fast ! Amazingly fast ! It
compiled at least 1,000 lines of code per second.
2. The User Interface was simple and extremely easy to
use.
3. Ive been using Cold Worrier for years and
therefore Id become extremely comfortable with it.
I just found out that the latest version of Metrowerks
er
Motorola
er
FreeScale Silicon Cold Worrier;
i.e. : Version 10.0, has just been dropped.
Too bad ! I thought it was a pretty good IDE and I was
very familiar and comfortable with it (previously, I
was working with MPW).
So
I need to find a new IDE to do Java development
work on the Macintosh under OSX.
Here are some of my criteria for selecting a new IDE
to do Java development on a Mac :
1. Is it cheap, or preferably free ? The reason for
this is that Im cheap and I dont have a lot of money
to throw around these days (working as a Peak Oil
Activist is shall we say
not very remunerative) ?
2. Does the IDE run on a Mac (obviously, I want to use
1 of my 5 Macs to do the Java software development on)
?
3. Is it Open Source ?
4. Is the User Interface easy to learn & use ?
5. Is the IDE extensible; i.e. : does it support
PlugIns etc. ?
6. Is the compiler fast ?
7. Does it have other unique and valuable features ?
8. Any other suggestions ?
By the way, none of the above criteria, other than the
IDE MUST work under OSX is a deal breaker. All the
criteria other than that are what I would call
desirables.
The final thing I should mention is that I posted a
similar question on the Mac Java mailing list a little
over 2 weeks ago. Several people responded. I was
rather shocked to discover that not one of the
Macintosh Java developers told me that they used XCode
for their Java development work. Most of them
preferred IntelliJ by JetBrains. Some preferred
NetBeans and a few said they liked Eclipse.
Not one said they preferred XCode. That really seems
to be a pity to me as Apple has put a lot of resources
into XCode. I would have thought that a result of that
effort would be that most or at least many Mac Java
developers would like all the work that Apple has put
into XCode at least enough to use the damn thing to do
their Java software development work on the Mac.
The other thing is that XCode is free and is shipped
with every Mac sold. In other words, you sure cant
beat the price.
Im really curious to find out why XCode isnt more
popular.
The truth is that I was planning to do all my
development work using XCode. The results of the
opinions that I got back from my posting on the Mac
Java Developers mailing list have caused me to
seriously reconsider using XCode for my Java
development work.
Any help, information, advice etc. that any of you are
kind enough to send my way would be immensely
appreciated.
