Size limit on a variable's Summary display?

Greetings,
When I try to view long strings in the debugger, the display gets cut
off at about 80 characters. This seems to happen in all views; in
the main debugger window, and also in variable and expression windows.
Is this behavior expected? Is there any way to cause the rest of the
string to be displayed, or to change the size limit? Is this a GDB
thing?
