Hi,

One common task for developers is creating disk images with a background
image, and suitably positioned icons.

Unfortunately this process is a little complex, as several non-obvious
steps are necessary to ensure the Finder's view options are preserved
reliably.

I'd like to announce dmgutil, a free perl script to simplify this.

dmgutil allows you to create a new sparse image, assign a background
picture, set the size and position of the volume and its contents, and
convert the sparse image into a minimal compressed image for release.

By invoking dmgutil from your own release script, you can automate this
part of your release process - allowing you to, e.g., create a script
that can fetch, build, and package your release in one step.

You can get dmgutil from:

Hopefully this will prove useful to other developers - if you encounter
any problems, please let me know.
