Historically, PB/Xcode was a 'one-window' (well, not literally) type
application. I believe this is probably a relic from those days. Now,
there are a few 'layout' preferences, and I'm guessing you aren't using
'all in one'. I can't think of any UI reason Xcode does do this, and I
would call it a bug.

Indeed, if you search the archives, you will see that "Hide Status Bar"
fixes some performance problems, 'Find' among them, IIRC.
