I guess when you add a localization, Xcode makes a copy of the english nib - including the .svn directory. So subversion thinks this (nib-) folder is already under version control.

Yup. That's exactly what happens. So you'll have to remove the .svn directory from the new (localized) nib manually. Then you'll be able to check it in (using Xcode or any other method).
