I'm not sure if this applies to you or not, but my solution was to use
Document Bundles. We make plugins (CFBundles) for our application, and
each different type of plugin has its own extension.
Our application has in its plist document types that are document
bundles that match our plugins' extensions. Works like a charm. All the
different plugins have their own icon based on their extension.
Of course, you may not have access to the application, but you can edit
the plist (probably not the best idea).
