Thank you to everyone for all for your help and quick responses!
I've got it set up now, the key was definitely setting it up with
svnX. It was a bit tricky, but after I got the initial import done
and checked out the working copy, it worked great and Xcode
communicated with the server just fine. Thanks again,

Like people said, you need to create your SVN sandbox through other
means (the same is true if you use CVS if I recall correctly).
I've found svnX handy for doing much of the heavy lifting (like
when I had to restore an accidentally deleted directory), but I do
use Xcode's integration to commit files I've modified. And I almost
always use command line "svn update" to get latest.
