When I went back to make the screen shots to submit with the test project, I discovered what my misunderstanding is. I will try to describe it, and the actual behavior I have observed, for the benefit of others who may follow. As always, this is unofficial and from a user, so caveat emptor.

Yep, sounds like you've now got it worked out. For a long time I was thoroughly confused about the relationship between styles (later configurations) and build settings, why some appeared in bold and others not. It all seemed hideously and unnecessarily complex. But it works as you describe it. Once you understand it you realize that it is a very elegant, flexible and powerful system. And thanks to the magic of Cocoa bindings (I presume) you can do very powerful things like view/edit the settings for multiple targets at once (select them and do a "Get Info") and for multiple configurations at once (when you select "All Configurations" from the pop-up).

I still want some sort of config file search path capability, but the basic config file behaviors make sense as long as you remember that Customized Settings don't follow your config files, and some Settings are Customized by default in a new project.

And as I said in my other post, if you set up your config files well then you will have very few customized settings at all, which will make things much easier to manage and you'll be less likely to be tripped up by exceptions when you don't expect them.

Cheers,
Greg
