why can't I examine defaults in the debugger?

I'm sure this is very elementary, but when I'm paused at a breakpoint, why
doesn't this work in the gdb console?
(gdb) po [[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults] objectForKey:@"whatever"]
gdb says:
No symbol "NSUserDefaults" in current context.
I don't understand what that means, or how to examine the defaults. Thx - m.
