conversion of a PowerPC dylib to a universal dylib

I am starting the conversion of a PowerPC dylib to a universal dylib and have run into a small problem.  The project previously built with Xcode 2.2, so yesterday I executed the Upgrade All Targets in Project to Native, and then built the new target.  I had to remove a couple of libraries from the project (the stdlib for example) and now the build succeeds, but the file produced has ".a" appended to the filename.  This is the convention for a static library, as I recall, but the project settings clearly specify this target as a Mach-O Type = Dynamic Library.  I tried clearing the "a" from the Executable Extension field in the Build pane of the Xcode Info screen, but Xcode won't allow this to stick.  How do I get this to build as a dylib, without the .a extension?   Thanks
