You guess correctly. I wasn't aware of this difference. When I try it
with a newer project, yes, I get the same results: just changing
Product Name works fine.
there, the executable name is not automatically derived from the
product name and
{EXECUTABLE_NAME} does not appear in the relevant build setting
fields.
Odd thing: I could only find {EXECUTABLE_NAME} in Get-Info-on-Target-
>Properties->Executable. Since the Target's Properties page feels
like a high-level inspector, a place where one would expect to edit
things like this, doesn't it seem backwards that this field contains
a derived value, and that the place where you *really* go to change
the name is Build Settings->Product Name - 40-odd rows down a list of
rather low-level settings, many of which are derived themselves and
obviously shouldn't be changed in normal use?
I'm not really complaining about this (I'm happy to learn how to
avoid having to change it in two places in older projects), and it
isn't any kind of problem to use Build Settings->Product Name. But I
do still wonder what's the purpose of having two settings if they
need to contain identical values.
Guess my point is, if we sat any programmer down in front of Xcode,
who had never used it before, and asked them to simply figure out how
to change the name of a built app, how easy a time would they have?
If it's true that things should be made as simple as possible, but no
simpler, then sometimes Xcode feels like it's trying for the opposite
extreme - as complex as necessary, plus a bit extra. :)
