The menu Debug->Attach doesn't work for you?

The nice folks over at Unsanity have figured out how to trick
XCode into actually allowing debugging of plug-ins:
Except that I'm NOT TRYING TO USE THE EXECUTABLE from the XCode
project; I'm trying to attach to a running process, which might
NOT be referenced in the custom executable. It's just dumb luck
that the custom executable refers to the executable to which I'm
trying to attach.
I am not sure if that solves your issue, but here is what the nice
folks at Apple showed me (and I use this technique successfully,
say, on Dashboard widgets):
- Create a new custom executable with about any binary. Say, /bin/ls
- Debug this executable
- Break the debugger
- "Attach" in the console
- Bingo
