I didn't say ntpd would likely cause problems; I said ntpdate would.
ntpd adjusts for drift (once it has gathered enough info to do so,
prompting many people to get confused about its behaviour when they
first turn it on), but ntpdate does a forced change of the clock,
instead of adjusting its speed.
Some systems aren't too happy with time going backwards (and giving
mtimes in the future), which is exactly what could happen if one runs
ntpdate periodically instead of ntpd, or if using a common filesystem,
even with ntpd, if their drift hasn't settled yet.
