Can't get Global Variables to work

Is there some magic incantation or project setting that's required to get
Global Variable to work? I only got this to work once. You're supposed to
click Global Variables in the debugger window and a big list of things shows
up. Then you're supposed to click on your application's name in that list
and the right side of that window is supposed to be populated with the
globals. I see the search box icon spin for a few seconds but nothing shows
up. Ever.
