If it's not a bug, it's probably implemented via the use of "- [NSToolbarItem visibilityPriority]".
But since you say that they "go there at random", I guess it would have to be a bug.

It may happen in accordance with specific algorithm, but it seems random to me. I have six items in the toolbar. As I narrow the window they disappear in this order (numbered from left to right): 6, 3, 1, 5, then the window won't go any narrower, so 2 and 4 are always visible. At the time they disappear, only 6 and 5 are the rightmost items. That feels pretty random to me.

I'm the one who should set the priority by putting items I most want to stay in the toolbar farther to the left in the toolbar. It would be arrogant for a developer to enforce any other set of priorities on a toolbar I customized. It also produces a very disconcerting behavior: I see that an item has disappeared, but I can't tell immediately which one it was. So I guess it's either a bug or a serious design flaw.

What happens if you customize the toolbar by first clearing it, and then adding the items in left-to-right order? I'm just guessing you might have (naturally) worked from the default toolbar.
