Indeed, how you're getting the file name is the biggest question. Also, paths are evil. You can use FSMakeFSRefUnicode() to make the FSRef given a file name in a directory, the file name can contain a / (assume the underlying FS, such as HSF+ supports it).

How are you obtaining this filename? Typically the OS APIs have enough smarts in them to take care of the necessary conversions for you, if you call them the right way.
