Indeed, how you're getting the file name is the biggest question.
Also, paths are evil. You can use FSMakeFSRefUnicode() to make the
FSRef given a file name in a directory, the file name can contain a /
(assume the underlying FS, such as HSF+ supports it).

enough smarts in them to take care of the necessary conversions for
you, if you call them the right way.
