Solved - sort of. It works again, but I can't explain why.
After doing a binary search and destroy for the differences between
accounts and restoring an old backup of .GlobalPreferences.plist, Rez
started working again normally.
After looking at the differences between the two files, and putting
them all back into place, I cannot recreate the original problem, so
for the time being it will remain a mystery. (I'd rather know what
went wrong, but I'm happy to have Rez working for now.)
