I too am a victim of this hideously annoying problem. Rebooting does
not always fix the problem. When it does fix the problem it will
just show up after not much use anyway and I can't be rebooting every
few hours just so that Monaco looks good. Up until recently I only
had the problem on my work computer (a Dual 2.0 GHz G5), but I
recently saw it on a new Intel iMac that I also use at work.
The problem, for me at least, is not just in Xcode. It's also in
Mail, BBEdit and pretty much anything else that displays Monaco.
Though currently Terminal seems to be displaying it properly for me.
Now this is interesting... I just launched Font Book (where Monaco is
also messed up) and selected Monaco and started moving the size
slider up and down (I read this a while ago as a possible fix) and
after doing this for a few passes suddenly it snapped back into
place. All the apps where it was wonky are now fixed. It worked on
the Intel iMac too. A weird solution to a weird problem?
Try it out and see if it works. I wish they'd just get it fixed once
and for all.

OK, I recall having the problem with Monaco 9 rendering
incorrectly in Xcode source files a while back. I must've done
something to correct the problem. But now that I got my new Mac
Pro and have added NO new fonts to it, Xcode is again using some
horrible kerning or something with Monaco 9. My system pref is set
to turn off text smoothing for font sizes 4 and smaller. I tried
changing it to 10 and smaller, but that didn't affect Xcode's
display at all (even after quitting and relaunching). I've also
tried setting the Xcode pref to 9.1pt or 8.5pt. Both appear to
round the size to 9pt. 9.5 works, but reading 9.5pt Monaco in
source files is just sick and wrong. :) It's too large.
When will this be fixed? How can I workaround the problem without
changing fonts? Monaco 9 has rendered *perfectly* for, what, 20
years before it started having problems in Xcode. Why the problem
in Xcode. Works great in Mail..
Have you tried rebooting? We've seen a problem here where the
system font cache becomes gradually more corrupted for Monaco in
Xcode, with an increasing number of characters rendering
incorrectly. Rebooting seems to cure it.
