The *it* is XCode itself. I've found that XCode simply dies and sends
me back to the OSX GUI with a nice message that invites me to report
the crash to Apple. The compiler may crash but what *I* see is that
the entire XCode application closes down. It does this regularly when
I'm editing code or when I'm "building" the project, or when I attempt
to "run" the program. There is no rhyme or reason to when or how it
happens. I can also be browsing through the code in an editor window.
I'll turn off "predictive compilation" to see what that improves, if anything.
The compiler crash doesn't take down Xcode. It sounds like Xcode is
some how in a bad state on your system (globally or just for your
user) and/or projects in a bad state.
As a test try creating a new user account on your system and use Xcode
from that user to see if it changes the crashing behavior.
