That's no better.
Actually, "split down" could describe both the lie of the
split line (from top to bottom with the resulting pieces
being moved/positioned to left and right), and the
direction in which the two pieces move/are positioned after
the split (one half up, one half down). Similarly, "split
vertically" could be describing the split line (top to
bottom, or bottom to top with views left and right) or the
resulting positions of the views (top and bottom); and
"split horizontally" could be describing the split line
(left to right, or right to left with views top and bottom)
or the resulting positions of the views (left and right).
For some perverse reason just this moment, my inner eye
sees "split across" as ripping the page diagonally.
