Or, on my ancient Pismo, user+fn+f1 or user+opt+fn+f1, etc.
I'll second that.
OTOH, in some cases Apple hasn't "gone key-equivalent mad"
enough. Some of the buttons on the Apple-supplied services
need key equivalents. Just this moment I'm thinking of the
find/replace dialog box. I'm used to using key-equivalents
to walk through files, replacing some occurrences and
stepping over others, e.g. adding an HTML nbsp after
sentence terminators without adding them after
abbreviations in the middles of sentences. In Nisus Writer
and CW it required holding down the command key and
choosing which of two fingers to click, now it requires
alternating between 2 fingers of one hand and tapping with
the other and hoping I don't slide as I tap and cause the
cursor to slip off of the on-screen button as I concentrate
on the found text.
But when it comes to adding key equivalents for an
application, fuggedaboudit. OTOH, I hardly ever use the
function keys these days unless you count the alternate
definitions of the arrow-keys.
It should be much easier for the user to define what the
function keys do in various contexts. It would be nice,
for instance, to let them trigger different AppleScripts,
depending on context, for instance, or simply have them
enter text at the current cursor...
