Not strictly Xcode-related, but we use SVN from within Xcode, so...

We've got some files that have Japanese or French names. A Windows
user checked them into the repository. svnX shows them correctly. But
it can't check them out.
So I tried from the command line, and got
svn: Can't convert string from 'UTF-8' to native encoding:
svn: MJM/Japanese/mtenlayouts/?\230?\147?\141?\232?\136?\181?\232?
\188?\170.dat
Hello? Isn't UTF-8 the native encoding for Darwin? I can't remember
the exact source of our Subversion client
[~/GameHouse] % svn --version
svn, version 1.3.2 (r19776)
compiled Jun 5 2006, 13:13:11
but I wonder if someone misconfigured it.
Is anyone using Subversion with non-ASCII filenames
