Simple way to indicate activity?

Is there a simple, low overhead way to periodically indicate activity to the system in order to stave off the screen saver, auto sleep etc.? I'm guessing there is but I don't know what keyword to plug into the API search to find it. I'd prefer Cocoa, since it's a Cocoa app, but carbon would work as well.

The problem is that I have a MIDI note reading training app and during use the only user input is through MIDI (other than start/stop and setup). Even though the app is constantly using Cocoa methods to draw and update text fields, the screen still goes to sleep as if there was no activity.
