Out of curiosity, why didn't you just replace the old icon file with a new one and keep the same name?

Well, because I like to call things by their name ! If a picture
represents a flower, I call it flower.icns. (What I called oldIcon.icns
in my post, only in order to be self-explaining, was really
chwilig_doue.icns).

That's an interesting suggestion though, I'll let you know if it works.

I guarantee you it will work. You'll need to update the Launch Services database, but you'd have to do that anyway.

(although that solution will still leave me unsatisfied for the
reasons mentioned above).

No one is going to see it, so now I can't help but wonder if you don't have anything better to do with your time than make the various changes needed to accommodate new icon names. ;-) If you use something like "AppIcon.icns" it will always be appropriate and you'll never have to deal with this issue again. Just my $0.02.
