MallocDebug "Unable to read malloc information from (null)"

I launch MallocDebug and then browser to my executable. I hit "Launch" and then wait about 60 seconds while the little colored wheel spins round and round. After that I get this error message:
MallocDebug "Unable to read malloc information from (null)"
I'm completely unable to debug my executable.
This issue was posted to the list a few years ago but never resolved:
What's up with this? I really need to debug this app :-/
