Prefix/precompiled header has no effect

Xcode 2.4.1 on 10.4.9
I created a file, my-prefix.pch, in my project. I set the following
build settings:
GCC_PREFIX_HEADER = $(SRCROOT)/my-prefix.pch
Yes, this yields an accurate path to the file.
GCC_PRECOMPILE_PREFIX_HEADER = YES
GCC_INCREASE_PRECOMPILED_HEADER_SHARING = NO
The build process ignores the prefix. The build log contains no
mention of the pch file. No precompiled cache file is generated.
Touching the pch file does not trigger any rebuilding. Removing
#imports of headers in the pch from my source files produces the kind
of undefined-symbol errors you'd expect from not including their
contents.
Turning off prefix precompilation has no effect.
Renaming the file my-prefix.h (and adjusting the build setting
accordingly) has no effect.
Cleaning the project has no effect.
I'm sure I've missed something obvious, but it's not obvious to me.
Any help, please?
The project file has been through some challenging environments, but
I hesitate to delete the per-user items inside it. Would that help?
