I haven't followed this thread but... yes.
For example, if you have an Xcode project document (.xcodeproj, which is
a bundle) on a computer that does not have Xcode.app, the Finder shows
this document as a folder.
If the bundle bit is set (which Xcode doesn't do), then Finder shows it
as a generic document icon. Much better user experience.
