The C++ standard *does* have a way around this (the "export" keyword),
however practically nobody actually has a compiler that implements
that part of the standard. So, any compiler that you're likely to
encounter (gcc, Visual C++, CodeWarrior, etc.) will require this as
well. Only one compiler that I'm familiar with implements the export
keyword.
So, in answer to your question: technically, it is a quirk of gcc, but
it is a quirk shared by almost every compiler out there; effectively
making that "quirk" de facto standard.
