Only two panes in the Build Results Window

I'm using XCode 2.4.1 and in most of my projects after having worked
for some time the Build Results Window ends up with only two panes
instead of the tree when the project is created.
I end up with the (optional) Build Transcripts and the editor pane
but the first and most important one is gone for good and I have not
yet been able to figure out how to get it back.
