I really hope that the Code Sense for C++ will be greatly improved in
Xcode 3, although my impression from reading various posts is that
Apple is focusing more on Objective C than on C++. It's hard to
articulate how excellent Visual Assist (VA) is and what an immense
productivity boost it provides. Here is my list of Code Sense
problems and VA features I wish Code Sense had:
1. Code Sense doesn't seem to work, or only works sporadically, in
several C++ situations, such as templates and namespaces.
2. Code Sense causes Xcode to crash - Frequently! This alone has
caused me to disable it by default.
3. The code completion with VA seems to be more "automatic" than with
Code Sense, for both function/method names and for variable names
(does Code Sense support automatic suggestions for variable names?).
In VA, in seems i only need to type something that is "close" to the
variable, function, or method name I'm thinking of and the automatic
suggestion is what I want almost every time.
4. The automatic indexing in VA is much more robust than Code Sense.
Quite frequently, Code Sense just stops working; I had to rebuild the
indexes to get it working again. An option to "rebuild all indexes in
this project and all contained projects" would be a very nice
feature. It's a big pain, when you have an Aggregate Project that
contains dozens of other projects, to have to manually open each
project to rebuild the Code Sense index (maybe there's some slick
Apple Script way to do this?).
5. VA provides spell checking and auto-correction for function,
method, and variable names. It's also a VA option to not spell check
inside comments and string literals.
I don't write Objective C, so maybe Code Sense performs magnificently
in that environment and I just haven't seen it. However, the VA
functionality for C++ is one of the biggest features I wish Xcode
had. There are several other reasons, not related to Code Sense, why
I prefer VS 2005 (tabbed windows, great data visualization while
debugging, etc.), but I don't want to hijack this thread, so I won't
elaborate. Although I do like the current Xcode, I'm hoping Xcode 3
will be a big step forward.

Hi.
Maybe in Apple's next release of Xcode (3.0), Code Sense will be
enhanced. Just curious though, what Code Sense features are you
looking for?

Hi all. I am a developer switching from Visual C++ to Xcode tools
Xcode tools is so wonderful that I don't want to turn back.
There is a famous programming plugin called visual assist in the
Visual C++.
Its code sensing function is very powerful , in the contrast, the
code sensing function builded in xcode tool is a little weaker.
So I want to know if there is any handy programming plugins for
xcode which can improve our productivity. After all, efficiency is
the main concern for us developers.
Thank you for any reply.
