He wants to basically say "gcc myFile.c" -- and frankly, if that is what you want to do, feel free to do so in the command line

Most projects tend to need some sort of configuration sooner or later: A project, a makefile, whatever you want to call it.

Xcode ("Big X, little c. Not XCode or xCode or X-Code.", do not anger the list gods!) wants a project with at least one target for everything. Because, really, most of the time, "gcc myfile.c" is not exactly what you want.
