I set the C Language Dialect setting to GNU99 but to no avail. In fact I tried all of Xcode 2.4.1's settings and still get the same error no matter what it's set to.

Yes.  Turn on C99 support.  Search for 'C Language Dialect' in the
project/target build settings.  (or search the docs for that term.)
