It's a Cocoa thing: -makeKeyAndOrderFront:

Using any language or framework, Cocoa or not Cocoa, you have to take some care about window ordering and keyboard focus. It's just Cocoa has a convenient method for the most common case. Likely, other frameworks have something similar.
