Think about how you are going to do this carefully. It may be much easier to piggyback on someone else's solution. That'd mean a lot less code for you. I don't know if it would work for you, but sqlite might be worth a look.
Sqlite supports databases up to 2 terabytes in size and includes a surprisingly good cache system. Can you re-factor your code to use database records instead? Exactly how much speed do you need, and can a database solution supply it?
