But not with much more useful information. That's about what I've
done too.
The only other thing that I've done is go through a Makefile one
target at a time and create an equivalent Xcode native target,
including all appropriate dependencies. It can take a bit of time but
it can result in nice, fast builds. And as Bill said, it also means
you can take advantage of Xcode's features like dependency analysis,
indexing and so on. (For example, when learning a complex source base
in C++, it can be useful to see a class diagram — or even step through
the code via the debug visualizer.)
