Have you tried a sacrifical virgin?  Find it in this past posting:

If Terminal works in the virgin account, you can copy its Terminal prefs
plist file, e.g. to /Users/Shared, and try that in the malfunctioning
account.

If /usr/bin/login is broken, "Archive and Install" is your friend.  Google
for it.
