Subversion should see it as a normal UNIX directory.
It does.
Make sure that
the .xcodeproj directory in the repository is not empty.
It is (empty, that is).
If it is,
add everything from inside the directory.
Why might Subversion have failed to do this?
You might also be advised to add an svn-ignore attribute for .pbxuser
files inside the .xcodeproj directory. These files needn't be kept in
the repository as they represent user-specific preferences.
Thanks for the instructions and the advice; we're actually trying to
minimize the number of user-specific preferences that differ amongst us,
but this is good knowledge to have nonetheless.

Hi! My Xcode won't open a colleague's project (which works for her
needless to say) because it's "missing its project.pbxproj file."
She looked for this file but couldn't find it! Help!
It should be in her <project>.xcodeproj wrapper (which is technically
a directory, not a file as it may appear to be in the Finder).
Was the project checked out of an SCM system like cvs or Subversion?
Had the project.pbxproj file been checked in?
Yes, subversion. It sounds like you might be able to advise us re:
configuring our svn client (I'm using RapidSVN - I'm not sure what she's
using) so that it recognizes this "folder" for what it is and treats it
properly?
